Using Archi with TOGAF
What is TOGAF?
The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) is a framework for developing an enterprise architecture. It may be used freely by any organization wishing to develop an enterprise architecture for use within that organization (see Conditions of Use).TOGAF was developed by members of The Open Group, working within the Architecture Forum (www.opengroup.org/architecture). The original development of TOGAF Version 1 in 1995 was based on the Technical Architecture Framework for Information Management (TAFIM), developed by the US Department of Defense (DoD). The DoD gave The Open Group explicit permission and encouragement to create TOGAF by building on the TAFIM, which itself was the result of many years of development effort and many millions of dollars of US Government investment.
What support is provided by Archi?
Archi supports the following aspects of TOGAF:
- Architecture Development Method
The steps and artifacts of the ADM have been captured into Archi using the McLeod Method Model. It can be used as a quick reference or communication aid, and to generate product- and work breakdown structures for TOGAF ADM based projects. It is possible for users to specialise or extend the process and artefact definitions according to their specific needs. The Archi repository can be used to store all project artefacts and models during project execution, and be used as a master store of these artefacts after project completion.
A number of the viewpoints defined in TOGAF have been defined in the Archi Graphical Modeler. Users can use these viewpoints, or model types as they are known in Archi, to create the views required for their particular project and store both the view itself and the architecture elements represented in the views in the Archi repository.
- The Enterprise Continuum
Building Blocks can be defined and associated with the other elements of the architecture. Archi can then be used to classify and manage Building Blocks according to the Enterprise Continuum.
- The Technical Reference Model (TRM)
All of the architecture element types defined in the TRM are available as data types in the Archi repository, as is the classification hierarchy defined by the TRM. An architecture can therefore be fully defined and stored in the Archi repository, and all of the elements of the architecture can be classified according to the TRM. Other reference models, such as the TOGAF III-RM and user defined classification models are also supported.
- The Standards Information Base (SIB)
The Open Group's Standards Information Base has been defined and populated in Archi. The SIB can be extended by users to include additional standards, including in-house standards that may need to be managed, stored or published. The Archi SIB can store the standards internally, or it can merely store a link to a standard stored somewhere on the web.
The standards contained in the SIB can be associated directly with other architecture elements in the repository, providing easy and consistent access to the appropriate standards by architects. This also makes it very easy to see the extent to which standards are used across various architectures.
